Let's just say our summer break hasn't really felt much like summer yet. Rain and cooler temperatures. We have however stayed clear of the path of tornados that have plowed through the midwest this past week. Terrible, terrible destruction. I will take the rain over the latter for sure.

Yesterday another storm was headed right towards us but we managed to get a session in before the rain! A super cute little guy that just turned one. I will post more of him later but for now let his sweetness take you into the weekend!
Here's to hoping for a Memorial weekend full of sunshine, good food and fun times. No matter what your plans are I hope you are able to sit back a little and enjoy!

Fast and Furious

I often feel like I am constantly running on the treadmill....go, go, go. If only I could get the treadmill results, hmm. This week has been no exception. It is the last full week of school for the girls, another school year has come and gone. New schedules and routines, or lack thereof, are upon us.

But this week started off a bit different than my normal. Monday afternoon I headed to the airport, by myself, to fly out to Orange County, California for my own little adventure. A workshop. I have wanted to attend a photography workshop for quite awhile. Derek and I had decided that we could make it happen this summer. I had kept in my head that if I was going to make the effort to attend a workshop I wanted to just go for it, go big, find someone who I knew I would enjoy. Over spring break an opportunity came into my inbox, a Jasmine Star workshop. Her workshops are known to sell out in as quick as an hour so there was no time to debate! After texting back and forth with Derek we decided to go for it. No regrets.

Tuesday was filled with information, laughs, challenges and new friends. I am now looking at my business through a different set of eyes. My head hurts a little and my lists are long but I am excited to dig deeper and see what I can find.

I truly am thankful for such an opportunity to come my way...I plan to post more, just waiting for some of it to settle in.

The school year is so close to the end, summer is near. The very thought makes me smile. Oh and please remind me of that later in the summer when I am begging for routine. As the year wraps up so do the senior pictures for the class of 2011. I really do love to work with the seniors, they are excited for their session and follow direction much better than my kids!

This gal had some serious height on me. I am vertically challenged as it is, then she shows up tall and in heels, I felt like a kindergartener. She could work it too! Rawr.

Working with a senior boy is so dramatically different than a senior girl. Heck, the difference between boys vs girls starts as early as a newborn session. I love that. It would be very boring if every session was the same.

McKinley couldn't have been more laid back during our session. He had no pre-concieved ideas, no worries about his outfit or his hair. He probably went along with me 30 minutes longer than he wanted but I never knew it. We just walked up and back in an alley downtown behind his moms store. She didn't tag along, she stayed in the store and let us do our thing. But it was a beautiful evening and we had plenty of other company walking by. That in itself is always a little interesting!

Thanks McKinley for hanging with me. Enjoy these last few weeks of High School and best of luck in college!!!

The moving boxes were not yet unpacked, heck they were barely off the truck! Yet, the mama of this cute face stopped everything to let me capture her daughter, to celebrate being THREE! She contacted me prior to the move and we made the appointment, they just had to get here from Tennessee! Priorities folks, she's got them. Stop and enjoy, the boxes will still be there.

It was chilly on this March morning but she toughed it out and we got some cute shots! Welcome (back ) to Lawrence, I hope we can work together again...maybe when it's a tad warmer!

A parade, Lawrence style. If you know Lawrence you know it will be fun and well ummm, unique. One of the very reasons I love this town. Having gone to college here that of course is another big reason I love Lawrence. The university puts so much energy into this town. I did leave the state of Kansas after graduation and got to experience other parts of the country, to which I am thankful. I always knew that if I came back home to Kansas, Lawrence is where I would want to land. A small town, yet it has so much diversity and spunk. A great place to raise a family.

So, enjoy some photos from our St. Patricks Day parade. It didn't disappoint!

Lovin' love - {Lawrence, KS engagement photographer}

Neither of them were looking for a relationship, I love that. Sara was working, raising her daughter and keeping up with all her activities. The same for Jay. But Jay had some neighbors who saw something in both of them and insisted that they meet. Sara taught their daughter in Sunday school and they wouldn't give up that the two should meet. Sara and Jay finally caved and well, the rest is history. Two years of dating and now a wedding in the fall! The funny part, the wedding date happens to fall on the match-making neighbors anniversary. That too was unplanned.

This engagement isn't just the brining together of two people but five. A new family. So, of course they were all part of the session. It only make sense right?

I have many more family photos but I kept going back to this one.

They weren't "ready" or expecting it and that is the very reason I love it.

Rawr.

I have to say something about these three.

They were adorable.

While I was just shooting Jay and Sara, they were off teasing each other, hanging out and laughing. Sara's daughter hasn't had siblings and I have no doubt these two will fill that role for her!

Where have I been?

I have been absent on my blog, whoa, big surprise. Let's just say I haven't been home much and when I have been it has been playing catch up.

It started with a trip back to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Ah, a heavenly getaway in January! It was brutally cold in Kansas this January. To lay on the beach in the warm sun was so incredibly refreshing. I am pretty sure I suffer from season affective disorder (SAD). I always have. Maybe someday we will retire somewhere warm. Unfortunately, the vacation "high" didn't last long. Upon our return back home we were welcomed with a snow storm and the kids out of school for 3 days. Ahh, reality.

This is the view from poolside at Casa Jose.

Just a short walk to the beach. That is Cozumel in the distance.

We would walk to 5th Avenue multiple times a day.

It is lined with shops, restaurants and fun locals!

Five days later this was my view in Denver.

My friend Tahl asked if I could come back out to get more photos of her Medical Spa.

I had been there in May but they had made some changes and needed me again, darn.

Vitahl is a wonderful, wonderful Medical Spa with a great professional staff. "Medical spa's " have become more common, so do your homework before booking an appointment with anyone. Vitahl is over 5 years old and is Doctor owned. They also have a plastic surgeon on staff three days a week. Botox injections are only done by a Doctor or a nurse practitioner, facial treatments are done by wonderful estheticians and the lasers are done by estheticians who have been trained by the laser companies. Not sure why I felt the need to throw all that information out at you besides the fact to brag at what a great place it is! I also enjoy getting a little pampered while there, something I probably wouldn't do at home.

Sometimes it is strange that I am grown up enough to have successful friends!

Four days from after returning from Denver we headed to Oklahoma City for the Nadia Comaneci Invitational. Nadia is actually there and presents the awards to the girls after each session. Yep, pretty cool. Josie went to camp this past summer in Norman, OK at Bart Connor's gym (her husband), she had the opportunity to meet both of them at that time. They are two of the nicest people! Gymnasts train year round so it is fun when meet season is upon us.

Before we headed out of town we went to the Oklahoma City bombing memorial.

I may sound old when I say this but I remember exactly where I was when news of the bombing broke.

The girls were full of questions and very respectful, I am glad we went.

Over the next month we have three more gymnastics meets, St. Louis, Kansas City and Wichita. Then right into spring break!

I have lots of sessions booked for March and April and am excited to get out and embrace spring! I am going to be doing give away on my facebook page so if you aren't already a fan head over there and become one!

Have a great weekend! Our 65 degree weather turned to ice and snow today. Grrrr!

Embrace the camera - {for fun}

I decided to join in on my friend Emily's weekly "embrace the camera". We mom's are very rarely on the other side of the camera. I know this mom is almost NEVER on the other end. One is because my own comfort with the camera attached to my eye and the other more realistic reason is YUCK. Who is that? Can't be me, I am much skinner and younger. Aren't I?

I am not one that is totally comfortable in my own skin, especially as I age. But this is me and this is how my kids see me on a daily basis. Who am I trying to impress?

Upon our return from Mexico we had a massive snow storm that has left us very cooped up! Today was the first day that the two older girls have been to school so that left just Harper and I home this morning. We have been having fun doing puzzles but even more fun? Getting to push the timer button on the camera. My kids LOVE that. So here's to time home with my youngest, oh these days are numbered. I know I have always thought I would be so thrilled the day all my kids are in school but really, I will miss this.

Weems family - {Perry, KS family photographer}

Back in early January I was thinking that we had been pretty blessed with a fairly mild winter thus far. I shot this session in that time frame, it was probably in the high 40's which was very bearable! I know that as I type this we have about 10" of snow on the ground and it is currently 13 degrees out. I think 40 would feel balmy! It doesn't help that I just got back from Mexico, warm, sunny, sand between my toes, ahhhh... Our mild winter is over but thank goodness the groundhog is saying spring is around the corner, because I need it!

I met this family thanks to one very special little girl, Violet. Meet her dear god-parents. Violet touched so many, many people in her short time here on earth and she continues to daily. Lives forever changed.

Men are generally the least excited to get photos taken and I can't say Mark was any different than the rest of them. I can tell you however, he never complained and I could tell he was there for one reason, his family. Capturing memories. We just never know what tomorrow might hand us.

Megan - Baldwin high senior {Baldwin, KS Photographer}

Megan has patiently waited for me to share her senior session with the facebook and blogging world, so here's to you Megan! We took her photos back in early November in the thick of the busy fall season. She has seen her gallery and chosen her favorites, most of which are shown here. But when we first talked in September about her session she was really wanting a few photos in the winter snow. We finally got that snow this week and were able to meet again and capture some super cute and fun photos. I think they were very much worth the wait!

So although she thinks she has chosen her favorites, this will be the first sneak at the snow photos, I have a feeling she might have a few new to add!

I heart faces - smiles

So I am throwing another photo up on I heart faces this week! This week the theme is smile. SMILE, I get lots of those! I am telling you the hardest thing about entering a photo is picking which one! I have loads of photos and so many that mean so much. But I didn't dig very deep for this one. This was taken just yesterday. We had our first snow of the year yesterday and we had to get out and celebrate a little. We have now had two days out of school, some good outside play time and lots of inside time, the snow can melt. I am over it. It is super pretty but yep, over it.

I heart faces- best face

Best face? Really? Do you know how many wonderful faces get in front of my camera? Brand new ones, ornery ones, innocent ones, loving ones, REAL ones. So instead of digging through files for hours and agonizing over a decision, I went with the first one that came to my mind. This is of one of my cousins little boys and it has always grabbed me. The blue of his eyes, the pink of his lips and the gold of his hair. The purity of it. I just love it.

Seems like yet another year has flown by! I wanted to wrap up the year with an adorable little man who made his debut just before Christmas. What an incredible gift for his family!

I have many more of him but it is 4:15 on New Year's Eve and I am still in my PJ's...the shower is calling me!

What have YOU been doing?

It seems like I run from one thing to the next these days. It is Monday, the kids are out of school, I am caught up on my photography (whew) and Derek is done traveling for the year. I feel like we can finally sit back and truly enjoy the Christmas season. Or week I should say. No, my shopping isn't 100% complete, but almost. The UPS man knows us well. What did we do before online shopping?

Life with three little people and a business leaves me with my new fashion trend, dark circles! But I wouldn't trade any of it. We have been blessed beyond measure and I know this time in our lives will speed by. So for now we soak it all in and keep running. Here are a few things that have been going on in our household.

Josie got her braces off and is now sporting a straight smile...

but bottom braces are coming in January, her mouth is a bit of a mess.

So thankful for a great orthodontist!

Harper had her Christmas sing-a-long.

Nothing cuter than a group of 3 & 4 year olds singing their hearts out.

Maybe a few picking their noses.

We have kicked off Josie's gymnastic season

Her hours of hard work paid off!

She got 1st place on the bars, beam and floor (resulting in 1st place all-around)

& a 3rd place on the vault.

Looking forward to watching her all season!

I had never taken my girls to the eye doctor as I had no concerns.

This summer I decided they should all go in for a vision exam (it is free for 3 & under)

Ummm...the result, a follow-up visit last week and TWO kids in glasses.

WHAT?

I can blame their dad as I still have perfect vision.

But I must say they are pretty cute.

We are currently taking bets on how long until these beauties are broken.

We have taken in a few great Jayhawk games!

I rarely take my camera but I did this weekend and got some fun shots.

Our seats are pretty incredible this year so it is much more fun to snap away.

I write this quick note of Thanksgiving while cozied up in my PJ's. Who can stay in their regular clothes after a day of feasting? Can we say over eat? Oh so yummy though!

I have so very many things to be thankful for and it is always nice to slow down and really take it in. I think as I get older I realize more and more what truly matters and how fortunate I am.

We made a cute little turkey to sit among us this year. The kids cut out the feathers and handed them out to everyone. We wrote a small message of what we were thankful for on the feathers and stuffed our turkey. The small feather could not possibly hold it all...

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

I got a phone call from this family in April to schedule their fall photo session. Yep, folks April. A planner and a smart woman to say the least! October is hands down my busiest month. November follows suit but October wins at the most requests. As the leaves were just blooming outside I reached in my brain to try and remember what week is usually "peak" for the fall color. I think we nailed it. The color this fall has been a little more sporadic since we have had the warmer weather, but still beautiful.

Thanks so much for driving over to me (all the way from Missiouri) and being a planner. You make up for those of us who aren't!

Sweet newborn goodness. She was right at three weeks at the time we took these photos, that still qualifies for newborn status right? They change so quickly! That is one of the many reasons it is so fun to capture them while they are still so fresh and new.

I got to meet this family for a photo session this summer to celebrate the end of the family of three and to capture the now big brother. So of course I was super excited to meet the newest member. A sprinkle of pink can now be found in this household. A little sister to be picked on for many years to come by her big brother. Thanks for letting me come over and spend the afternoon with you all!

We had tried for this session starting in July. Yes, July. We finally made it happen in October! Yay! Let's just say if we wanted to to rain, I just had to schedule this family in. It can be hard enough to nail down a date once, so 3 reschedules (yes, all due to rain) was quite a feat. Funny thing, it did rain on this day but the skies parted by evening and we were able to pull it off.

This is one of my very best friends dating back from the 7th grade. Oh the silly things we did together through those middle school and high school years. Lots and lots of giggling. Now we both have three girls and no doubt will be surrounded by their giggles and drama for years to come. *smile*

They live in the "country" on some beautiful land so there was no need to trek anywhere but their own back yard. So peaceful out there! Enjoy the peek and I am so glad we were able to get this done so you don't have to go shopping for new outfits yet again. Love you guys!

We had so much fun last weekend on this shoot. These guys were totally relaxed and just themselves the whole time. It does help that their personalities are fun and full of spunk. All of them!

We met Dave while moving to Lawrence, he was our realtor. A friend of a friend situation and he led us to our house and our great neighborhood. He did not steer us wrong! They are only one street over from us so we see them regularly and the kids go to school together. Actually Andrew and Josie are in the same class this year and Clara is in a dance class with her. Denise is an avid runner, I am telling you energy pours out of all of them. Thanks so much guys, enjoy your peek!

Anderson family - Lawrence, Kansas family photographer

I have known this family for a long time...a certain member since his birth. Yep dad, aka Jan-Eric, is my cousin. I am a mere 7 months older than him. We were next to each other in the birth order of our extended family. Lots and lots of great cousin memories! I will spare those but we truly had some fun times.

I met his wife while in college, we lived within the same walls of a sorority house. She is as sweet now as she was then. They now have two adorable little blonde dudes and live here in Lawrence. I do have to say I enjoy having extended family in town (my aunt/uncle and another cousin are here too)!

On to the pictures, they are always way better than any of my attempts at writing!

I am quite certain that the expectations and excitement going into a senior picture session as a high school boy vs a girl is very different. How many guys do you know that get excited to put together outfits, fix their hair and be on display for over an hour? I know how much my husband still loves it.

Connor, you were such a sport. Maybe you are just shy, better yet polite and wouldn't have every told me no way. I have no doubt we went beyond your desired time limit. I hope you find some here that you like but believe me when I say there are many more! Have a great senior year!

Brandi did her "homework" before our session and had a couple of spots scoped out for their session. They live in a small town near me so not being as familiar with the area it was great to just follow them to a spot.

Love these guys. One of the things I can thank my husband for, his friends. I wouldn't have gotten to know them without him. We all use to live in KC and had about 5 less kids between us, so we would see them much more frequent. Still close by but 6 kids later, we rarely do. So, I was beyond excited to have an excuse to hang out with them for the evening. The kids are of course beyond adorable and I loved all the personalities that just flow....

We have tons and tons of great pictures so just choosing a few was tough. I often go into my blog or sneak and think, I will just do like 5 pictures. I don't think that ever happens.

These three cute faces are ones that I get to see almost daily, they live directly across the street from us. We have been in our house for over 4 years now so I have gotten to see the two girls grow up since birth. It is no wonder why Harper (my youngest) is attached to the hip with Maddy at school. They are in the same pre-school class and Harper thinks Maddy hung the moon. But to say they are comfortable around each other is an understatement. Oh, I don't even want to think about the trouble those two could cause in the future.

They have been in front of my camera many times so it is old hat. That said, Keyan still acts shy and doesn't like to show his cute smile for me. He had just pulled out one of his top teeth a few days before so we were trying hard to get a big cute toothless smile. Too cute!

So glad for good neighbors. Thanks kiddos!

Over the summer I had a chance to meet this family and take photos for now big sister, Saylor. I was thrilled when they contacted me to take newborn photos of their newest addition. They just added a little more sugar in the house with another little girl! She was just a 9 days old at the time and the sweetest little thing.

Since we all know writing isn't my thing and I can barely keep my eyes open I will let the photos speak for themselves!

Tate - {Lawrence, KS high school senior photographer}

Thanks to one of my friends being chatty while getting her hair done one day last fall I got to meet Tate and her family. My friend was showing some family photos I had done for them and being a good friend by giving me the word of mouth referral (the best kind). I did some family photos for Keri and her kids last November, just before Christmas. We did another mini-session in February and now I was lucky enough to get to shoot Tate's senior pictures. Did anyone follow all that? I am not sure I did.

When I woke up & it was chilly out, yes 36 is chilly, I wasn't so thrilled. We were meeting mid-morning and I was just hoping it would warm up quickly. It did! It was a beautiful day, a little cool in the shade, but was a perfect one for photos. Tate and Keri did a wonderful job with her outfit choices. The color, the texture, the layers...all things I talk about, all things I love! Add in that Tate is a natural in front of the camera, this was not only a fun morning but an easy one!

I want to put in a plug for her mom Keri. She has just moved to a new salon downtown. She and another two hairdressers opened it a few months back. Salon Pearl. Not only is it a cool location & building, these gals have style and experience. They left the comfort of their past salon and went out on their own. Yep, I am now on of Keri's clients . I have no doubt if you ever wanted to get your hair and make-up done before a session they would be happy to assist. It can make such a difference. Just look below...

Ella is ALMOST 6 months. We had to squeeze in a session where time allowed so we are calling it her 6 month photos (what's a week off?) I got to do her newborn photos back in April, so fun and so stinkin' cute! (I didn't blog those, they were just on facebook) She is still a little peanut but has changed so much. But we must talk about this hair. Seriously? She has more hair than some 2 year olds. It is so adorable!

She wasn't so much wanting to be a model on this evening. Can't say I blame her. She was asleep from the car ride, so got woke up and thrown into model mode. "Wait, what about my milk?" Never mind the slight chill in the air. I know mom, aka Missy, thought we got nothing but we got some good ones! Here are a few of my picks from the night!

Well I guess fall is officially here, both according to the calender and evidently our weather too! This night was about as perfect as it gets, early fall at it's finest. Mix in a cute family and I would say it makes for a pretty good night!

We had a little guy who wanted to roam, he was on a mission and it didn't include getting his picture taken. Big sis was a trooper and went along with whatever I asked of her...I can get pretty bossy.

Kudos to Jayme on being a planner and booking this session over the summer. You make up for folks like me who are great at last minute efforts. Thanks Gary, Jayme and kiddos!

My title should probably read, Shelby + Lisa + Bentley = Family. How could I have left him out? Oh, but we didn't. He was right with us the whole time & not too happy if he wasn't included in the photo.

Newly engaged. Sigh. They met as many couples do these days, online. I will date myself now, as that was not an option in my prime dating days. Maybe a few personals in the paper (ewww) but no real online presence like there is now. A first date to El Mezcal, a yummy Mexican restaurant in town, & the rest is history. They could not have been any cuter. So happy together and so excited to be getting married. I got an email from Lisa just a few days (maybe a week or so) after the proposal and we had engagement photos planned. A check mark on the long list of wedding planning. Although they are planning a small destination wedding. Smart, very smart.

We decided on a rural location and ended up at an apple orchard not too far out of town. Sadly their crop has a fungus this year so no apples. But the scenery was just as beautiful. The owners couldn't have been nicer to us. They allowed us to roam all over their beautiful property (in a golf cart even!)

I am so happy to have met you both - even though Lisa, we sorta met in our past.- Yes, Lisa figured out she use to be our mail carrier. How funny is that? You better be sharing photos of your fabulous wedding!

We finally made it happen. You see, we have talked about taking photos since last winter. Kim, aka mom, and I would see each other almost everyday last school year while dropping of our girls at pre-school. We often talked in passing about her desire to get some photos taken. Now that we don't see each other everyday, we got it scheduled. I think it was worth the wait. The weather was perfect, the setting was peaceful and the subjects were willing. A pretty good combination if you ask me! Not to mention a great reason to show off some cute clothes. Both Kim and the youngest are in their clothes they got from my Matilda Jane trunk show in August. Love it! In fact I have all those same pieces.

Last of the Colorado vacation - Day 3

Day 3 of our trip to Colorado was the day our girls were looking forward to the most. We had made arrangements to head over to a ranch and go horseback riding. It was about an hour and a half drive but we had zero problems getting everyone up and going that morning! We watched the temp drop as we climbed in elevation but honestly, it was a picture perfect day.

As we pulled up to the ranch (who does not have a website or I would share it here) they were cleaning up from a party the night before. The owner of the ranch was getting married the next day so they had a big bash with friends and family. Evidence was everywhere that they had a wonderful time! Our guides admitted to being a little "slower" on this morning but they didn't show it at all.

There were dogs everywhere, I am talking something like 20. All different breeds and all of them totally laid back and just chillin'. Two of them joined up on our ride, what a big playground they have to romp on each day! We met our horses, got quickly acquainted and headed out. The horses were great and it was evident the confidence the guides have in them. My girls hadn't ever ridden a horse on their own (think pony rides at the fair), but you wouldn't ever have known it. No one showed any concern...so off we went! I do have to say it was a little tough to ride a horse and take photos, I did my best!

Although the horses pretty nautrally just followed each other our guides encouraged us to do and go as we desired. If we wanted to get off the path or trot, whatever, they allowed it.

This happens alot but I don't always listen. More often no one wants to be in front of the camera for me. But on the drive back home I asked if we could just pull over to the side of the road and Emme was a willing subject. A cute one at that...

What an incredible day. We went over to Breckinridge for lunch then headed back to Canon City in time to watch football. It was a day we will not forget for a long time. My girls expectations of horseback riding are forever ruined.

Madison 6 months - {Lawrence, Kansas infant photographer}

Wow, has this little cute thing grown! We took her 3 months photos this spring (here), now she is already 6 months old and very mobile. Often when taking photos of babies at this age they can sit but don't do much else. Just hang out. Well, not Madison. She can crawl and is trying to walk! She was happiest when we let her stand up hanging out on a chair. Either that or eat rocks, flower petals, grass, you know the usual. Too busy to smile at us most of the time. No doubt her mom and I looked silly trying all the usual games to get some laughs. Oh but the things we will do...

Colorado trip - day two

On our second day in Colorado we decided to make a day of the Royal Gorge. I had been white water rafting out this way in the 90's but hadn't ever been in the park. The park is a bit of a time warp but you cannot deny the natural beauty . We headed in and went straight over the bridge...wait, no we hit up the carousel first, then the bridge.

Derek's palms might have sweat a little (he is not a fan of heights) but not any of my girls.

No big deal.

It is a long way down folks. The river looks like a tiny pencil drawn line.

Emme picked some wildflowers...shhh don't tell. I am sure this is discouraged

I didn't see it, honest.

I was just the recipient of the sweet gesture.

We trekked around for quite awhile then decided we would take the cable car back over the gorge vs. walking back across the bridge.

It was quite a haul up and around so we enjoyed the ride back over.

That is what was carried water from the river into Canon City, until the mid 70's.

Baby Violet - {Lawrence, KS infant photographer}

While we were in Colorado last week I had an inquiry come in from my website with a request to set-up a photo session and as I read it my heart sank. It was not the normal "we would like to get some family photos done" request. It was, we don't know how much longer we have with our little girl and we would like to take the opportunity now to get some photos taken of her.

Violet was born in late April with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This wasn't anything that was known prior to birth but it was discovered shortly after she was born. (you can read more about their journey on her care pages - click here - ) They had been doing chemo but just last week made some huge decisions to stop. Go home. Enjoy every moment with their sweet baby...at home.

This is a excerpt from their care pages:

Yesterday, Justin and I brought Violet home for good. We met with the doctors again, and the blast cells in her bone marrow are filled with disease and a transplant will no longer be an option. Dr. Manalang explained that she would do whatever we wanted to do and if we wanted to keep going, she would, however she did not believe the leukemia would go away. She said if we continued with another round of chemotherapy, Violet would get really sick (possibly end up in the PICU) and at the end of the day, the leukemia would still be there. So they told us to go home, think about what we want to do, and we would see her in clinic on Wednesday.
After a lot of tears, Justin and I have decided we will no longer put our daughter though this pain. It would be completely selfish of us to continue. Dr. Manalang could not give us an exact time, but said Violet has more than a month and less than a year left. Either way, we will enjoy every minute we have left with Violet and we will make sure she knows how much she is loved. We may even go on a family vacation somewhere.
This is not us giving up. This is giving Violet the best life for her. We will continue to pray for a miracle! We will continue to go to clinic and receive small doses of chemotherapy to prolong life as much as we can. There is also oral chemotherapy we can give her. We will know more about that when we meet with Dr. Manalang on Wednesday.
Violet has completely changed our lives. She has taught us so much about love, life, family, hope, faith, and living! She is the strongest person we know, she is our little hero! I only hope and pray we can be as pure and simple as she is.

We set something up as quick as possible and I was beyond honored to meet Violet and spend some time with them this past week. It wasa dreary evening and Violet was coming off a rough day but we still managed to get some happy smiles from her. Amy had gotten her an adorable tutu and so we started there...

She thinks her mom and dad are pretty funny.

Having just met them I do have to say she looks like her daddy (minus the flower)

She was getting sleepy, pretty normal,

being a model is tough stuff.

Still a smile over dad's shoulder.

She did fall asleep but we went ahead and changed her clothes and attempted a few more. Sorry, Violet, I snuck one in of you getting changed.

She pretty much slept the rest of the time and we were all fine with it.

Nothing as sweet as sleeping babies.

Violet knows love. She is surrounded by it. She has impacted every life she has come in contact with and I have no doubt hundreds more who have never met her. I know she has impacted mine. Hearts are forever changed by this tiny little innocent bundle.

Colorado trip - day one

We packed lots into our first day that is for sure. We hadn't made the entire drive the night before so we still had a couple of hours of driving before reaching our destination. We had decided that we would head up to Pikes Peak. That is something that none of us had done and we thought 'why not?'. Remind me of this later please....

After a hour drive up a mountain, which of course included lots of sharp turns and a 2ft shoulder protecting you from driving off the road, we made it to the top. Harper had fallen asleep at this point and the rest of us were mildly green from the great drive. The views were pretty amazing the entire drive though.

It was COLD up there! As in low 40's and windy cold...

Emme's face says it all. Crack up.

Maybe we should have ridden this!

While at the summit, Josie turned very pale and says, "I feel like I am going to pass out". Me, being totally dizzy myself, feel her pain and we headed back down quickly. We had to stop for a brake check on the way down so we got out again. But her face truly says it all.

At least she had her color back!

I can't say that I am afraid of heights but I will say that I am afraid of steep stairs with small children. If there was a fall it would not be good! I mean really not good, and my girls were trying to skip their way up these things not even concerned about tripping on their own feet.

O. my. sweet. goodness. I love the chance to hang with cute babies! I am so glad that we finally got our session complete! This family contacted me early in the summer to get some photos of their little miss. A busy schedule (for both of us) and one re-schedule but we got er' done.

I met them out at Pendleton's market, the same spot I mentioned in the earlier butterfly post. While we were out there the previous week I thought it would be a great spot for photos. With permission of the owners, who didn't even hesitate to say yes, we headed out on their property for a beautiful evening. Thanks for hanging with me as we trekked back and forth & going with whatever I threw at ya!

Labor Day Vacay

Last Wednesday after school we loaded up the suburban and headed west. Colorado. A little last hurrah to summer. Derek's dad lives there and we hadn't been to visit him in too long! (He more often comes to us). So, we were overdue.

If you have ever driven through Kansas to Colorado you might recognize this scenery.

Since we left late in the day we didn't go quite the whole way.

So these are the cute messy morning faces at the hotel.

The next day our scenery quickly began to change!!!

We loaded our days with adventure, I will share soon! For now, I am tired and the piles of laundry oh, the piles of laundry...

I heart faces - photojournalism challenge

I am posting a photo this week on I ♥ faces. It has been a long time since I have taken the time to post a photo there. It is always fun to try and come up with something that fits the theme. Then even more fun to look at all the photos that get posted.

This week the focus is photojournalism. While I believe so many photos can tell a story they might be more often stories that are tucked in our hearts and memories. Our own photojournalism I suppose. But I did go a little more on the traditional photojournalism approach.

This is my Emme just this past week while visiting a local farm that has a butterfly bio-villa. They provided us with a guide to identifying the different butterflies that we might encounter while there. She held tight to it and was very serious about making a correct identification. Well, for a few seconds, then she was on to the next spot. Even though she cannot read yet, she of course could match it with the pictures provided. Such fun. I hope she is always eager to learn!

I mentioned it in the previous post, my blog was in need of a make-over. I attempted one and I think it is done enough for me to post on here. It is still a semi-work in process, but isn't everything? I hope to start posting on here more often and at times it might be more personal day to day things rather than only photo sneak peeks. But no entry without a photo, how boring!

This cute little guy is my nephew, Weston. I have posted photos of him, here & here. It is amazing how fast the first year goes and how much they change! We started out the morning after his big birthday bash, he wasn't quite ready for that. Nap, please! So, we attempted a few and then decided I would come back after a nap (or actually two).

The biggest smile or more like laugh I have ever gotten on him.

Hilarious.

He had quite the audience & I have no doubt if you could have been watching us we were a sight. Beth's parents were here from New Hampshire along with my father-in-law from Colorado. (We did get some cute grandparents in a few too.) The three of them along with Dave and Beth and all my "stuff", treking around their back yard and the land that surrounds it was comical. All 5 adults were behind me trying to get him to laugh, it worked.

I also took lots of photos at his birthday party and had made them a video of him attacking his cake. He had a great time with his cake. I took these photos several weeks ago but didn't get them posted here! I had done a sneak peek on facebook which worked for the time. Facebook is a pretty darn slick (& quick) way to preview photos. So if you don't already follow me on facebook, go do it! I have several sessions that I did not take the time to blog about. I admit, I had a serious juggling problem this summer.

Meet Saylor. Cute, cute Saylor. She was about to celebrate her 3rd birthday. Mom and dad wanted to create some photos for her birthday and mark the time when they were a family of three. Yep, she is about to be a big sister too! How fun!

Kim aka mom, shared some of their hardships of becoming a family that made my heart sink. You can tell they cherish this little girl to the fullest and will be anxiously awaiting the arrival and healthy delivery of another baby girl soon. I do hope I get to meet her too...

Hill family - Part 2

I am going to start this post with some rambling because that is truly what I do best.

School starts this week, what? Ummm, where did summer go? I love summer but have to admit I am pretty ready for some daily structure in our house again. It has been a tough balance for me this summer, trying to stay on top of both business and family. Many days I feel like I have ADD and I dabble a little everywhere but nothing is completed! So my wishful thinking self thinks having the kids in school part of the day will help with some of that. I want to be MOM when they are home.

The real reason for this post is pictures of course. I wanted to get a quick sneak peek in for Heidi and her boys! We had met in June for some pictures and we went for a quick part II last week. I think we got some keepers!!! Hope you enjoy and I will let you know when I am caught up and get your gallery up! Again, back to that kids in school thing.

My blog is in need of a makeover, bad. Look for some changes hopefully soon!

This past spring was my first introduction to the line and I fell in love with it. The style is so adorable and unique. I also love the versatility among my girls. What might fit as capris on one is pants on another. A dress on my 5 year old is a baby doll top on my 9 year old.

Since the line has not officially launched yet it isn't up for viewing or pre-shopping online until Sunday.

O. my. goodness. Not much else to say, the pictures will speak for themselves on this adorable little thing, Stella. She is about to celebrate her 1st birthday, such fun!

She was all smiles, the whole time! I had brought along Josie (my oldest) and Addi (my neice) to "help" since Derek and the other two girls were out of town. Don't usually bring kids along but I think she enjoyed it. It is always so cute how kids, even the little ones, are just drawn to other kids. So, in the end they actually were a help.

I had a hard time coming up with these few to post...so many really good ones. Enjoy your peek. Oh and get ready, the boys will be lining up before you know it!

Dad is a football coach at KU, she will even signal for a touchdown.

Hopefully she does that many times this year!

A fun little sneak peek for Stephanie and the good looking guys in her life! We met up last week after having to re-schedule due to rain the week before. We had a beautiful night to get together, especially considering how hot and humid it has been!

Although you can hardly tell Stephanie is pregnant with #2! She looks so great! They are adding a little more sugar to their family, a girl. I hope we created some fun memories of the little family of 3. Good luck with the remainder of the pregnancy! Be in touch soon...enjoy!

As I drove to meet this family raindrops where hitting my windshield. Not what we were hoping for. So, I took them to this area knowing we could start under a little bit of a cover. Thankfully the rain didn't amount to anything and we ended up having a great evening. It was pretty humid, but we stayed dry.

I work so often with little people (including the ones that live in my house) that it was a fun change of pace to have a family with grown kids. One of the daughters is leaving for Brooklyn, New York for law school and they were wanting to get a family picture done before she left. It is a reminder for me to see how time flies. Kids grow, fast. But how proud they must be.

Last week I headed back over to downtown KC to meet up with these four cuties! When talking with their mom before hand we decided to go a little more urban, twist my arm. I love the old, worn, texture and color that buildings can provide. She also let me know they were a busy group, no problem!

She was absolutely right, busy. The older two girls were total troopers and enjoying the picture taking adventure. The younger two, who happen to be 19 month old twins, could care less. Surprised? Not at all. They were adorable and seemed to enjoy having freedom to roam. Heaven forbid stand still. If you know me I don't aim for the perfect picture when everyone is looking straight at me with perfect smiles on their faces. I do however try to get everyone in the same frame.

I think we came away with some super cute pics along with a little bit of a workout. At least I was sweating! I often think parents might think I am a little crazy. The places I find to be perfect often don't seem so much at the time, rain puddles and all. So, thanks Janel and Mike for hanging in with me! Enjoy your peek!

Last week my cousin Camille and her husband Ramsan, along with his son Ethan, came up to Lawrence to visit her family. Bonus...we usually get to see them for a short bit while they are in town. This time we talked about trying to get a few pics of them while they were here. I knew the perfect place to take them, Vinland Valley nursery. Not only is the owner one of Camille's high school friends, it is a wonderful nursery with great stuff everywhere. I make the trek out there every year to get my flowers and I have been wanting to do a shoot there.

Besides Ethan spotting a snake within just feet of us it was a pretty great morning! Yuck, snakes make my skin crawl!

Thanks Camille, Ramsan and Ethan! Hope you had a good visit and that we get to see you again soon!

One last thing I want to share. Camille and Ramsan just celebrated their one year anniversary.

I love the story of how they met. Camille a loyal Kansas fan met Ramsan a loyal Memphis fan while in San Antiono at the Final Four. For those of you who may not know, Kansas did win that game. (Sorry to put the knife back in Ramsan.) They dated long distance for over a year then tied the knot last summer. Camille left Austin, TX and moved to Memphis...it must be love! They are absolutely adorable together and I couldn't be happier for them. Love how they met but really just happy they found each other!

Ok, I lied, one more thing. She just is starting a new business in Memphis called Camille's on Wheels. It is healthy, organic lunches delivered to your child at school. Great idea!!! I know how bad our school lunches are here, would be great to have another option. Good luck Camille!

Fix grandkids - {Lawrence, Kansas children's photographer}

Last November we spent several days in Mexico...ahhh. I wrote about it here. Great trip! I mention it because these are the adorable grandkids of the generous owners of Casa Jose. (check it out, awesome house!!) After returning from the trip I gave them a thank-you by way of a photography session. We knew we would be waiting for summer and a time when all the family was together. Half the clan lives here and the other is in California. Last Friday night the time had arrived and we went for it. Major goal, a picture with all the kids. Anything else, bonus. Well, that was my goal, hope everyone else was ok with that!

love, love, love this age. this little guy just had his first birthday this month. freeze time. please. remember to enjoy it. you know all those things we all hear but how very true it is!

i went to high school with his mom and dad and they happen to live here in lawrence too. i haven't seen them since high school but thanks to the world of facebook we were able to connect. so glad we did!

this is my niche'. i absolutely love to take pictures of the little ones just being themselves. will was no exception. he was great. full of happy smiles, raspberries and just crawling around.

Oh my neglected blog. I guess I have come to the reality that I am not a consistent blogger. Not even once a week? I try. So many things to stay on top of! As I mentioned in my previous post I have been much better on facebook, than here. Slap 'em up, tag and done. Easy peasy!

Ok, now on to the purpose of this post. Four cute kids, colorful shoes and yes the recycle center! I have shot here before and when I found out what this family was going to be dressed in I thought I would be a fun fit.

We shot these several weeks ago with a fathers day gift in mind. Well, rewind several months...mom bid/bought a session with me from a local school auction that I had donated to. I happen to know her as her youngest was in Emme's pre-school class. So we talked Father's day clear back in April. Seemed so far away. We made it, barely.

Kids were great! Few playful games to keep the boys interested, talks of ice cream and we were done! I hear they still talk about when they went to get their pictures taken by the "trash" place. Cracks me up. The places I think are a gem can often be unique for sure. But what better memories than a stiff studio!

I am putting a picture this week over at I heart faces, been awhile. This week the challenge is "play". I have an endless supply of those! So, the hard part... picking ONE. I even changed since typing this blog.

I just love the pure joy on her face in this pic. No, it isn't perfect but it is truly my Emme playing. No, posing. Gotta love the left over tattoos from a school carnival. What a rebel. Ha, just noticed the the baby zhu zhu pet in her hand too.

Metcalf family - {Lawrence, KS family photographer}

Have I mentioned May was a busy month? I was in Iowa, Denver and out to Western Kansas all in consecutive weekends. That on top of getting the girls end of school things wrapped up and life in general has left my head spinning just a bit. But it has been fun and I would do it all over again! My blog has suffered a bit but what else is new. I have kept up better with sneak peeks on FACEBOOK, so if you aren't a fan go and become one now!!

During our time on the road I have been able to get behind the camera with lots of family and friends from out of town. I love it! This family is one of them. Derek grew up in Ulysses, Kansas, a small town way out in Western Kansas. He no longer has family living there (not blood anyway) so we don't get out too often. That on top of the over 6 hour drive to get there.

His high school does an all school reunion every 5 years. He hadn't been in 10 years so we decided to go this year. These guys let us crash at there house every visit. Thanks!

Well, we snuck out just before sunset on our last night in town to grab some pics. One other thing fun about doing shoots in different towns is new places to explore. We were pretty much able to just drive across the street to an open wheat field. So pretty this time of year!

Denver drama {Kansas pet photographer}

You are about to get a blow by blow of a photo shoot gone bad.

Meet Reiley. A sweet, cute, eight year old Weimaraner. Well, she looks sweet here doesn't she? Pictures never lie right? Well on this night she decided to show me her mischievous, playful-drama side. What started out as an amazing, beautiful evening in Denver made a minor turn but all ended well.

Dory works at VITAHL, my friend Tahl's medical spa in Denver (previous post). While out visiting a few weeks back we went out to capture a few fun moments of Dory, her boyfriend and her dog. They are just down the street from Denver's very own Wash Park. A great park that is ALWAYS buzzing. So we met at their house, snapped a quick few pics and headed to the park with picnic basket and dog toys in tow. {Funny, side note. They live on the same street I did while living in Denver.}

How about we run off some of this energy so we can get some good shots. She may or may not have been let off the leash. Just sayin'.

This one is for you Dory...Crazy local woman yelling at us and telling us to "smile, you are going to be on the news". Little did she know.

She wasn't happy that the dog was in the water with nature. Never mind that she has just been seen taking the geese eggs and putting in her basket. Yes, really.

Ok.

At least a half hour has passed and Reiley is not coming back to land. Gets close but then goes back out. We are all yelling and have now drawn in a bit of a crowd. All of us concerned that she will tire out and drown.

Solution?

David strips to his boxers (and nice leather shoes) and goes in after her.

-these aren't the best photos but you get the idea. I felt a bit insensitive for taking in the first place!-

He gets out to her and starts heading back to land pushing her along when...

we hear him yell out "HELP!" The large crowd gasps!

Dory doesn't hesitate a second, throws off her heels and goes after them both. Well, I know she was going after David for sure.

A woman is yelling at her to stop as we all envision this train wreck getting worse by the minute. "GIRL!!! GIRL!!!! DON'T DO IT" Dory didn't even hear that, she just heard David's cry for help.

Oh yeah, 911 is now called.

Emergency help arrives in the form of 3 fire trucks and paramedics. They couldn't have been nicer. All 3 of them are out and fine by this point, thank the LORD! David had yelled for help because he was helping Reiley out and she gave up swimming. He couldn't hold himself and her up. She then swam again.

The paramedics just talked to them and made sure they are really ok, offer blankets and

head on out. A local vet who knows Dory just happens to be out walking her dogs and checks out Reiley. She too is fine.

We then saw the news arrive, see the man on the lower right with tri-pod.

That was our cue to get the heck out of there, quickly!

She only hugged.

The wet walk back home. Well, David is only wet beneath. His clothes were dry since he had gone down to his underwear.

All smiles now. Everyone is ok.

I might be mistaken but I think these two got a little closer that night.

Oh, and Dory, you are even beautiful soaking wet!

Thanks for the fun! Took me a while that night for my adrenaline to come down! Definitely made for the most memorable shoot or attempted shoot. Yeah, no charge on this one.
